A Final Landing on Iwo Jima

This one-hour documentary delves into the emotional journey of a Marine veteran, wounded in the savage fight that began in February 1945, as he returns to Iwo Jima. We also trace the steps of another Marine’s son, who is on a quest to piece together his father’s World War II experiences. His father, a silent witness to the combat on Iwo Jima, has left behind a puzzle that he is determined to solve.

The battle is also being reviewed, but this film’s real focus is on the men who were there and their personal stories.

We flew from the United States to Guam and then to Iwo Jima to film this documentary, which focused on a 100-year-old Marine and his trepidation about returning to the location of one of the war’s most brutal fights.

This film offers a unique ‘then and now’ perspective on Iwo Jima, juxtaposing the historical context of the island’s desperate fight almost 80 years ago with its present-day reality. The viewer is taken on a journey that spans generations, providing a comprehensive understanding of the island’s historical significance.

This hour-long documentary, narrated by CBS Sports’ legendary announcer, Jim Nantz, includes over 30 interviews.

Incredible and rarely seen, drone footage of Iwo Jima is also part of the storytelling, in addition to filming inside some of the eleven miles of caves on Iwo, utilized by the Japanese in their defense of the island. “A Final Landing on Iwo Jima” is a personal journey back to the island for two travelers, one who lived the nightmare on the island and the other who only heard bits and pieces about this fight from his father, who was also there.
