Road to Rome: World War II
Narrated by Jim Nantz
After capturing Sicily in the summer of 1943, the Allies turned their attention to mainland Europe. In September, Allied forces landed at Salerno, establishing a foothold in Italy and beginning a long, bloody campaign toward Rome.
The objective was clear: capture the Italian capital and drive German forces north. But the Road to Rome would become one of the most difficult and costly campaigns of World War II. Allied troops battled a determined enemy across rugged mountains, steep ridgelines, flooded valleys and heavily defended rivers. Casualties on both sides were staggering.
Narrated by CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz, Road to Rome: World War II chronicles the American and Allied soldiers who fought their way north along Highway 6—the main road leading to Rome. Their journey took them through some of the most brutal fighting of the war.
Largely overshadowed by the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the Italian Campaign has often been overlooked. Yet the men who fought there played a critical role in the Allied war effort in Europe.
Filmed on location in Italy.
